I spent more time on ReConnections in the past 36 hrs, more than I have spent on current school work. With that said, I hope to attempt two ReConnections in the next week, the first with simple flyers by Sunday/Monday, while trying to give priority to some of my other work.
(Besides being swamp with work and not prioritizing) I’m excited for this project (which is why I insisted on creating this blog/twitter before even executing any part of this piece) There’s a lot of room to play, have fun and grow, and my friend, Rita Lee, suggested a really poetic direction to take the project in.
Can’t wait to get to the streets! A part of me hopes, even though slim, that if the persons in the MC don’t reconnect, that at least people will slowly be more aware of their surroundings and the people around them. Maybe this could be a small step towards breaking the barriers we set up for ourselves (sun glasses, ipods) and engage with those right next to us. Granted, I know that can be quite the reach. But I’m really into exploring all the different aspects of this right now. At the end of the day, if one person gets a kick out of reading the MCs/RCs, I would feel satisfied.
A lot of this is hypothesizing. Anyways, if any of this isn’t clear, please let me know via comment/reply/ask box; criticism and suggestions are welcomed!
(PS: Still working out some kinks in the blog/twitter. I realize I’ll probably have to change it at some point when this grows. So if you notice any funky things let me know, I’m in process of trying to spruce things up.)
So the idea started with maybe perhaps posting flyers like the ones seen on street lamps and brick walls all the time, but imagined them on subway pillars and tile. I could repeatedly post the same missed connection or multiple ones that occurred in the same place this way.
Any paper thing that would be too large (like a banner) would most likely get taken down right away, and be too obtrusive.
Then I thought, depending on the place, I could probably use chalk as well.
I really enjoy the idea of reintroducing the these moments back in the spaces. Some of the MCs are funny, sad, hopeful or poetic and I wonder how it will affect the dynamic of the space, if at all.
Perhaps the people in the Missed Connections will meet. At least maybe, hopefully?, we’ll just be more aware of one another during our day.
Read what we’re about.
While there’s a lot of harm on the internet (and the real world too), the internet is the fastest medium in which we try to connect with one another. Everyday moments on the street can be just as fleeting as tweets on Twitter, but we continue to try to connect despite this.
Inspired by Craigslist’s Missed Connections, ReConnections is about bringing awareness to the Missed Connections that happened, on site, in hopes of possibly reconnecting the people.
